Earlobe Repair & Ear Reconstruction
Earlobe repair is a short surgical procedure that fixes torn, split or stretched earlobes, usually under local anesthesia. It restores a natural lobe shape, allows re-piercing after healing, and works even on damage that is years old. For missing or damaged ear structure, full ear reconstruction is also available.
What is earlobe repair?
Earlobe repair (lobuloplasty) is surgery that corrects damage to the soft lobe of the ear: split lobes, elongated piercing holes and stretched tissue. It is different from ear reconstruction, which rebuilds cartilage and structure of the ear itself, and from otoplasty for protruding ears, which repositions the ear.
Most earlobe repairs are office procedures you walk in and walk out the same day.
What causes earlobe damage?
The lobe has no cartilage only skin and soft tissue which is exactly why it stretches and tears. The common patterns:
- Heavy earrings and elongated holes. Years of heavy earrings gradually pull the piercing hole downward until it becomes a long slot rather than a point. One of the most common reasons women in the Gulf seek repair, where substantial gold earrings are worn from a young age. The hole is excised and the lobe rebuilt to hold an earring again.
- Torn and split lobes. A complete tear happens in a moment an earring caught on clothing, a hairbrush, a child’s hand. Because the edges heal with skin covering them, they will not rejoin on their own; repair removes the healed edges and reunites the lobe.
- Stretched ears and gauge reversal. Deliberately stretched lobes can be surgically restored many patients request this for professional reasons, and the change is permanent. Very large gauges leave less tissue to work with, which affects the final size; this is assessed honestly at consultation.
- Trauma, bites and accidents. Lobes and ears injured in accidents or animal bites can be repaired or, where tissue is missing, reconstructed see the reconstruction section below.
- Keloids and piercing scars. Keloid removal can be combined with lobe repair, together with a prevention plan which matters because keloids are more common in some skin types, and prevention should be part of the surgery itself.
Can an old torn earlobe still be repaired?
Yes. A lobe torn years or even decades ago can be repaired the healed edges are simply reopened and reconstructed. The age of the injury does not prevent repair, and previously repaired lobes that have torn again can usually be revised. If you have been living with a torn lobe assuming it was too late, it almost certainly is not.
How earlobe repair is performed
The procedure is short and precise typically well under an hour per lobe, with no hospital stay.
- 1
Examination and marking
The lobe is examined and the repair is designed and marked.
- 2
Local anesthesia
The lobe is numbed; you stay awake and comfortable throughout.
- 3
Removal of damaged edges
The healed edges of the tear or the stretched tissue are removed.
- 4
Reshaping and layered closure
The lobe is reshaped and closed in layers with fine sutures.
- 5
Same-day discharge
You go home with simple dressing instructions; most patients return to normal activities the next day.
Earlobe repair vs ear reconstruction vs otoplasty
| Earlobe repair | Ear reconstruction | Otoplasty | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Treats | Torn, split, stretched lobes | Missing or damaged ear structure after trauma, cancer or microtia | Protruding ears |
| Anesthesia | Local | General or local, case-dependent | Local or general |
| Duration | Short well under an hour per lobe | 1 to 4 hours, sometimes staged | About 1 to 2 hours |
| Downtime | Minimal days | 1 to 2 weeks per stage | About 1 week |
| Scar | Fine line within the lobe | Planned, positioned scars | Behind the ear |
| Typical patient | Earring damage, gauges | Injury, cancer surgery, congenital | Prominent ears, children and adults |
If your concern is only the lobe, you need repair, not reconstruction. If the ear itself is misshapen or prominent, see otoplasty.
Ear reconstruction in Dubai: trauma, cancer and microtia
Ear reconstruction rebuilds the structure of the ear itself when tissue is missing or damaged, going beyond the lobe using the ear’s cartilage framework principles, local flaps and grafts, sometimes across planned stages.
After skin cancer removal: the defect can be reconstructed with local flaps or grafts, rebuilding shape while respecting the cancer clearance the same reconstructive principles used in reconstruction after skin cancer removal elsewhere on the face. As medically indicated surgery, it is often partly covered by UAE insurance; confirm specifics with your insurer.
After trauma or bites: torn or partially lost ears are rebuilt using cartilage framework principles, sometimes in stages early assessment improves options. Ear injuries frequently occur alongside other facial trauma, and are assessed together.
Microtia in adults: an underdeveloped ear present from birth can be reconstructed in adulthood through complex, staged surgery. Suitability is assessed individually, and where a different specialist pathway serves you better, you will be guided to it honestly.
Recovery, aftercare and re-piercing
The first week: expect mild soreness for a day or two, managed with simple pain relief. Keep the area dry as instructed, sleep on the opposite side, and avoid pulling clothing over the ear. Fine sutures are removed at a short follow-up visit.
When can I wear earrings again? Not until the lobe has fully healed and regained strength typically a matter of weeks for lightweight studs, and longer before re-piercing a rebuilt hole. When you restart, begin with lightweight studs, and place any new piercing slightly away from the scar line for strength.
Preventing keloids: for keloid-prone patients, prevention starts at surgery and continues after it tension-free closure, silicone gel or sheeting on the healed scar, and early review of any thickening.
- Choose lightweight earrings for daily wear; save heavy pieces for short occasions
- Prefer studs over long danglers, which pull the hole downward
- Thin posts stretch holes less than thick stalks
- Protect the scar with sunscreen for 12 months
- Do not smoke while healing
- Remove earrings before sport and sleep
Will there be a scar?
Yes a fine line within the natural contour of the lobe, which fades substantially over 12 to 18 months. Honest expectation: no surgery is scarless. For keloid-prone skin, the prevention plan above is part of the surgery itself, not an afterthought.
What does earlobe repair cost in Dubai?
The cost depends on whether one or both lobes are treated, whether it is a simple split or a full stretched-lobe rebuild, and whether keloid removal is combined. You receive a written, itemised quote at consultation, with no obligation.
Reconstruction after cancer or trauma may be partly covered by insurance as a medically indicated procedure; purely cosmetic repair is not.
